Polar vs. Nonpolar

Ethylene is a nonpolar molecule. This is because, unlike a polar molecule, it has an even distribution of electrical charges. No end of the molecule is more negatively or positively charged than another end. Also, there is more than one line of symmetry present which aided me in coming to this conclusion.

History

Ethylene is a simple organic compund that is a colorless gas with a pungent smell. It has been practiced with plants since the ancient Egyptians. The Egyptians used gas figs in order to stimulate ripening. The ancient Chinese burned incense in closed rooms to enhance the growth of pears. In 1901 Dimitry Nelujubow proved that the active component was ethylene. He determined this by observing that plants placed near gas lanterns had abnormally shaped stems and leaves. However, it was not until years later (around 1935) that ethylene was proven synthesized by plants and the plant hormone responsible for fruit ripening. Ethylene serves many functions and it is the oldest known growth regulator.

You know what you need for your plants? Ethylene of course! You want to use ethylene on your plants because it increases their growth rate. Ethylene has been proven to stimulate shoot and root growth (triple response). Also it stimulates leaf and fruit abscission and Bromiliad flower induction. Ethylene also aids in stimulating flower opening and fruit ripening. This gas is quite helpful and will improve the maturing time of your plants. You can also use it to quickly ripen fruits and vegetables you have at home.
